Indore-Budhni Rail Line: Work on the Indore-Budhni rail line has begun in the Mangliya area of Indore. Bridges, underpasses, and tracks are being constructed in the fields and barns. With the completion of this 205-kilometer line, more than 1,000 towns and villages will be directly connected to the rail network. The project has lagged significantly behind schedule, but the target for completion of the entire line is now 2030.
This is a major rail project in Madhya Pradesh, connecting three districts: Indore, Dewas, and Sehore, and will reduce the distance between Indore and Jabalpur. Farmers in the villages through which the line passes were opposing the project. This caused several obstacles to the project’s launch. However, land acquisition has now been completed in most villages, and construction has begun. The project faced the most opposition in the constituency of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
The delay in the Indore-Budhni rail project has also been raised in the Lok Sabha. The construction of this new rail line between Mangliya village in Indore and Budhni has been approved at a cost of ₹3,261.82 crore (US$3.2 billion). This year’s Railway Budget allocated the highest amount for this project.
Approximately ₹1,500 crore (US$1.5 billion) has been spent on the project so far, with most of this amount going towards compensation distribution. According to MP Shankar Lalwani, officials have been instructed to complete the construction work within the stipulated timeframe, and this issue has been highlighted in railway review meetings.
Benefits of the Project
– Travel time from Indore to Mumbai and South India will be reduced.
– Directly connecting Budhni to Indore by bypassing the busy Bhopal and Itarsi route (ghat section from Budhni to Barkheda).
– This rail line will start from the existing yard in Budhni and connect to the Western Railway’s Mangliya Village station near Indore.
– The rail line will connect Sehore, Dewas, and Indore districts. Farmers will find it easier to transport their produce to major cities.
– This rail line will connect towns and villages like Nasrullaganj, Khategaon, and Kannaud. These areas currently have no rail connectivity.
